“You left your lunch at home! Again!” I thought, grabbing Sarah’s lunch bag from the kitchen bench.

I raced through the school gates, past the sign that read “Rosalie Primary School”, when I noticed something seemed wrong.

It was lunchtime, but no-one was playing on the playground.

Carefully I checked my sister’s classroom.  It was empty.

I was about going to go home thinking “maybe they went on a field trip or something” when I heard a strange, inhuman noise coming from the music room.  “What could it be?” I thought.

When I opened the door to the music room, I saw a fairy hovering in the air. She was wearing a jumpsuit woven out of leaves and her wings seemed to sparkle like tiny little windows into space.

As I stood there shocked, the fairy looked at me curiously. I shook my head to snap out of it, then I asked her “Are you real?”

“Of course I am, why wouldn’t I be?”  She said.

I thought about this for a minute, maybe I was just, dreaming.  “Well, you’re supposed to be fictional, aren’t you?”

“Perhaps, and yet, here I am.” She said.

I couldn’t argue with that, but I did have a lot of questions.  “So why are you here?  And where is everyone? Did you take my sister? What’s happening?”

She waited patiently for me to finish, then explained.  “My name is Julabel, Divine Enchantress of Privith. I'm here because the mad mage-king Xorpler has kidnapped all of the people here. I have come to find a human powerful enough to take down the dark mage and his forces to free all the creatures he has captured!”

I was afraid, this all seemed too much, but I had to have answers. “Where is my sister? Why is he taking everyone?” I asked.

Her eyes darkened as she spoke. “He’s a powerful sorcerer who takes creatures from worlds in other dimensions to harvest their energy so he can do his powerful magic. This power has made him the king of our world, yet he has destroyed countless other worlds just like yours so that he can remain king!”

The room suddenly felt cold.  “So he’s going to destroy our world too?  What about all the people? Why is he doing this?”

“Perhaps I should explain. Xorpler wasn't always evil. He was the beloved prince of our realm, next in line to be king. But when next in line to be king.  But when the old king perished in the war between Privith and the Empire of Avaloes, the death of his father drove him to fury, making him vow to get revenge on the people that killed the king!  He took over the kingdom and drained the energy of the nearer dimensions to make his magic more powerful. Using this power he defeated the Emperor of Avaloes and absorbed the energy of their entire race, destroying their world. He's been sucking the energy out of parallel dimensions and becoming stronger ever since.”

I was shaking, this was a lot to take in. “You said you were here to find someone powerful enough to defeat him.  Do you think I am that person?”

“You are the one.” Said Julabel.  “I can sense it.”

“But how would I be able to help, and why me? I'm just a child, and Xorpler sounds like a really powerful guy, like, invincible!” I said.

“Our dimension’s magic may seem powerful, but it is not without its limits. Centuries ago our most powerful mages created something beyond comprehension, a wrinkle in our reality.  Known as Soul Breaker, none of our dimension may touch it and survive.  Soul Breaker drains all magic like a black hole, turning all who dare wield it into dust. But you, a human, from a dimension without magic, may control this force with your bare hands. With the Soul Breaker, you could destroy Xorpler and free your people, and all others he has taken!”

“B-but that sounds really dangerous! What if I get hurt? I can't do this alone.” I cried.

“You won't be going alone.  I'll be coming with you.  I'll try to hide and protect you with what little magic I can summon, though in combat I am no match for Xorpler or even his lowest soldiers. Me and my people also have many friends in our realm who will help us when the time comes.”

“And what if I say no??” I asked.

Julabel paused. “If you don't help defeat Xorpler, all Earth’s life-energy will be consumed and Xorpler will be one step closer to enslaving every dimension! You are the chosen one! We have to stop him now!”

I thought about this for a minute. Julabel’s argument was clear, besides which I had a chance at something bigger than my life of homework and chores!  Eventually, despite the obvious danger, I made my choice

“Ok, let’s do this!”
